Dr. Tam Nguyen leads the small business program for drug discovery and development at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). He manages a portfolio of grants and contracts to transform research discoveries into innovative products that can prevent or treat substance use disorders (SUDs). Dr. Nguyen is continuously scouting for cutting-edge technologies and actively recruits companies to the NIDA mission. He also mentors teams participating in the NIDA $100,000 Start a SUD Startup Challenge, an initiative to foster the translation of research ideas into successful new ventures. He oversees various projects, from pioneering pharmacotherapeutics to novel devices. Notably, Dr. Nguyen led the NIDA "Cause of Death Elucidated"(CODE) initiative to develop postmortem toxicology screening technologies for drug overdose analysis. Before his tenure at NIDA, Dr. Nguyen significantly contributed to drug discovery and development at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
