Rebecca Alvania, PhD, MA, MPH is Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID), where she leads efforts to advance evidence-based health education and communication for the public and healthcare professionals. Her career has focused on science communication and supporting the advancement of research across the continuum from basic discovery to translational and clinical application.
Prior to joining NFID, Dr. Alvania served as CEO of the American Society for Cell Biology, where she led the organization’s strategy, programs, and operations. Before moving into executive nonprofit leadership, she spent more than 10 years in scholarly publishing, including senior leadership roles at the American Society for Microbiology, Cell Press, and Rockefeller University Press. She began her career in science communications at the National Academies.
Dr. Alvania holds a PhD in neuroscience from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, an MA in science communication from the Johns Hopkins University, and an MPH from Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
