Patient Perspective
Mackenzie's Mission
Mike was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2013. It was a challenging journey in finding the condition after several doctor visits and much weight loss, muscle weakness, fatigue. Once diagnosed with multiple myeloma, he did research in learning about his condition through the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, support groups, and patients. Mike learned that experts were located in his city of Phoenix at Mayo Clinic. They reconfirmed the diagnosis with no treatment at the time with close monitoring. Mike’s kidney function decreased in a year and a half. A biopsy on the kidney showed that amyloidosis was present. Chemotherapy was started immediately for 3 months; two other rounds of chemotherapy were delivered over the course of the next 3 years. In 2018, his multiple myeloma was considered a minimal residual disease (MRD), but amyloidosis continues to be problematic, primarily in kidneys, and is treated on a regular basis with the symptoms still being present. Over 3 years ago, Mike connected with the newly formed Mackenzie’s Mission Amyloidosis Speakers Bureau (ASB). Mike speaks to medical students and physicians on signs and symptoms of recognizing amyloidosis. He shares the journey a patient with the rare condition, such as amyloidosis, goes through as the condition is often misdiagnosed, overlooked, or ignored before being correctly diagnosed. Mike owns a wholesale medical supply firm and resides in Phoenix with his wife Debbi and has 3 adult children and 2 grandchildren.
