Joanna Stanicka, Ph.D. is scientific co-founder and CEO of Axonis Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing first-in-class KCC2 therapies for chronic neurological disorders with significant unmet need. A Harvard-trained scientist with more than 15 years of experience in biochemistry and neuroscience, Joanna has multidisciplinary expertise spanning genetics, cell biology, and neuroscience. She joined Axonis as Chief Scientific Officer and was appointed CEO in 2019, leading the company’s growth from early-stage research to a well-funded clinical-stage organization. Under her leadership, Axonis has raised more than $157 million in funding, including support from the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense, and a $115 million Series A financing in 2024. She has built the company’s scientific and operational foundation and is a co-inventor on six patents. Prior to Axonis, Joanna conducted postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Zhigang He at Harvard Medical School, developing novel approaches to neuroregeneration and neuroprotection. She earned her Ph.D. in Cancer Biology from University College Cork and has received multiple industry innovation awards, including recognition as a Massachusetts Next Generation female CEO in life sciences.
