Dr. Norwood earned his Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Virginia Military Institute, followed by five years in the Navy as a submarine officer. Upon leaving the Navy, he attended Virginia Commonwealth University, earning his PhD in organic chemistry in 1995. For the next 11 years, Dr. Norwood served on the faculties of James Madison University, Coastal Carolina University and the University of Richmond, teaching organic chemistry, biochemistry, general chemistry, and utilization of instrumentation in research. Rounding out a broad experiential background, Dr. Norwood has 8 years’ experience as a Laboratory Director and Manager, in accredited analytical and toxicology laboratories. He is also a certified Program Management Professional. Dr. Norwood supported both JPEO and JSTO as a contractor for six years before being selected as the Division Chief for the Advanced and Emerging Threats Division in the JSTO Chemical and Biological Technologies Department in 2020. The Division supports fundamental research in Threat Agent Science (TAS) as well as the development of medical countermeasures (prophylaxes and therapeutics) against a variety of known and emerging chemical threats.
