Bhanu Jena
Co-Founder & Academic Chairman,
Porosome Therapeutics
Bhanu P. Jena, Ph.D., is a globally recognized leader in cell biology whose discovery of the porosome, the universal secretory portal at the cell plasma membrane, revolutionized understanding of how cells secrete hormones, neurotransmitters, and enzymes. His elucidation of the porosome’s structure, function, and chemistry has paved the way for new therapeutic strategies targeting diseases rooted in secretory defects, including cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and neurological disorders.
Dr. Jena has also pioneered nanoscale thermometry and differential expansion microscopy, offering affordable, high-resolution methods to study cellular structure-function relationships and detect conditions such as myopathies and cancers.
His numerous honors include the 2024 Lipid Science Prize (Camurus Research Foundation, Sweden), the Distinguished Scientist Award (Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine), election as a Fellow of the AAAS, and membership in multiple national academies across Europe and Asia. He has received six honorary doctorates and several distinguished lectureships, including the Hallim Distinguished Award Lecture with Nobel Laureate Ahmed Zewail. Dr. Jena is a member of the Academy of Scholars at Wayne State University.
