Asif Jan, PhD

Asif Jan, Ph.D. is Executive Director of Lab Workflows & Data at Genentech, where he leads a portfolio of AI, data, and research platforms advancing early research and discovery. He brings more than 18 years of building data and AI capabilities across the biopharma R&D value chain. Much of that work has centered on the responsible use of sensitive patient data. Over a decade at Roche, across the Diagnostics and Pharma divisions, he led data-science and engineering teams handling clinical-trial and real-world data — building enterprise data platforms, establishing data governance and data-reuse guidelines across hundreds of trials, and pioneering real-world data for regulatory use cases in partnership with the FDA. His technical foundation is in large-scale distributed computing: at CERN and the European Space Agency, he built GRID and big-data systems that processed data across multi-country scientific collaborations — the distributed-data paradigm that underpins federated learning today. He later applied federated learning directly as Chief Data Officer at OWKIN, working with academic cancer centers to train models without moving patient data. He holds a Ph.D. in Neuroinformatics from EPFL.
