Annica M. Wayman, PhD, is the deputy director of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) at the National Institutes of Health. She supports the NCATS director in leading the Center, where she leads the implementation of the NCATS strategic plan, manages day-to-day operations, and oversees scientific programs and extramural affairs.
Before joining NCATS, Dr. Wayman was associate dean of the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). There, she directed the translational life science technology undergraduate degree program, the professional studies in biotechnology graduate degree program, and non-degree, lab-based biotechnology training courses. Before her tenure at UMBC, Wayman worked at the United States Agency for International Development, where her team focused on policies and programs in science for use in international development, including the Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research program, a 10-year, $100 million program that funded more than 400 researchers across more than 57 countries. Prior to this role, Annica worked at Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) in engineering roles ranging from advanced technology development to new product development for BD’s anesthesia platform.
Dr. Wayman has a PhD and an MS in mechanical engineering with a research focus in biophysics from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a BS in mechanical engineering from UMBC.
