Janet McNicholas, PhD

Chief Legal Officer
Invenra Inc.
I am a life sciences industry professional who loves what I do: Trusted Advisor, Problem Solver, Risk Navigator, Biotech Industry Advocate, and People/Resource Connector, serving innovator companies for the past three decades (and just getting started). I continue to be thankful for every day of my 30+ years of service with the life sciences industry. I have had the enormous privilege of serving biotech companies to help them to develop therapeutic products and platforms that help generate those products, including antibody products, gene/gene editing therapies, and cell-based products. I have enjoyed advising biotech companies in their licensing and agreement matters. I am grateful for my many years of experience with biopharma litigation and opposition matters. It has also been a privilege to advise companies in the development, management, and enforcement of their worldwide patent portfolios. As a law firm partner for several decades with a focus on IP and transactions, I have extensive experience with patentability, patent landscape, freedom-to-operate, infringement, and validity assessments. I've conducted IP audits and provided transactional and IP support in connection with a variety of acquisitions, licensing, financings, collaborations, and/or partnering deals. I have acted as a strategic advisor to companies to help them mine their developing and mature patent portfolios in view of business and commercialization objectives to maximize value. Prior to practicing law, I conducted research in immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics at the University of Illinois as a pre-doctoral student and then at Stanford University and at the California Institute of Technology as a post-doctoral fellow of the Arthritis Foundation. I have truly enjoyed every opportunity that I have had to speak at national and international scientific, business, and legal conferences on business, legal and IP issues relating to recombinant biologicals, therapeutic antibodies, next generation biotherapeutics, bioprocessing/bioproduction, biosimilars, pharmaceuticals, Hatch-Waxman Act, branded and generic drug development, medical devices, patent and regulatory exclusivities, partnering/outsourcing, translational research, bio-entrepreneurship, development of innovative next-generation therapeutics, and product development and commercialization strategies.
