Founded in 2020, Varda Space Industries is a private, venture-backed organization developing a revolutionary microgravity platform for the development, formulation, and production of small molecule and biologic therapeutics. Varda’s microgravity platform is grounded in decades of proven research conducted on NASA’s space stations. By eliminating factors such as natural convection and sedimentation, processing in a microgravity environment provides a unique path to formulating small molecules and biologics that traditional manufacturing processes cannot address. As an example, a recent Keytruda study by Merck validated the ability of microgravity to improve the particle size distribution and offer a path toward an IV to subcutaneous reformulation. As a result, Merck recently announced the release of an easier-to-use, more patient compliant subcutaneous formulation of Keytruda. The new subcutaneous formulation will extend the critical patent life through 2040.
