Substance use disorder (SUD) remains a heartbreaking medical challenge, imposing significant strains on individuals, families and economic resources, while overloading the healthcare sector. Within the past year, nearly 60 million individuals either used illegal drugs or misused prescription medications, with over 13% of Americans age 12 and up engaging in drug use monthly, a number that is only increasing. To help address this epidemic, patient advocates are building new interventional programs and innovative NIH-funded biopharma companies are creating novel technologies to address the chemistry of SUD, from human-on-a-chip platforms that model drug overdose to first-in-class molecular drugs to reduce SUD. These advancements offer fresh perspectives on enhancing clinical intervention, unveiling innovative biological pathways to reduce substance use, and creating safer and more effective medications. Hear from cutting-edge companies, the NIH and patient advocates seeking to disrupt the field with new methods to end the devastating epidemic of SUD.
