Avoid the Cycle of “Panic and Neglect": How Ongoing Commitment to Innovative Partnerships Futureproofs Against the Next Pandemic

Breakout Session
Infectious Disease and Vaccines
29C
Despite growing pandemic fatigue stemming from the endurance of COVID-19, it is the responsibility of the scientific community to stay vigilant to protect our global citizens from the next big outbreak. We continue to face a persistent threat from COVID-19 and influenza variants, and we’ve seen an alarming rise in other respiratory diseases, as well as outbreaks of novel viruses like Mpox. Further, many scientists believe climate change has the potential to increase outbreaks of these novel threats by altering the movements of pathogen-carrying animals and increasing their interactions with humans – this means the chance of seeing another pandemic in our lifetime may be higher than we think. Panelists will discuss the urgent need for multi-faceted partnerships between global public health authorities, manufacturers, scientists, data scientists, and regulatory bodies to adequately prepare for global infectious disease threats before they start, practical solutions to address them when they arise, and forward-thinking suggestions for identification and surveillance techniques for new and emerging threats.
