Closing the Practice Gaps in Precision Oncology – What are the Practical Solutions?
June 18, 2025
Breakout Session

While huge advances have been made in ensuring optimal patient care in oncology where diagnostic testing is required prior to initiation of therapy (i.e. precision medicine), we continue to see practice gaps which result in patients not receiving appropriate care. This is a particular issue outside of large academic medical centers, and can result from a multitude of reasons including biospecimen collection challenges, appropriate testing not being ordered, or targeted treatment not selected despite positive diagnostic test results. Indeed, some research indicates that only one-third of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer who should receive a targeted therapy actually receive that therapy due to these practice gaps.
Panelists will discuss where they see the main pain points across the diagnostic journey, how this affects patient care (including for underrepresented minorities), where each key stakeholder in the precision medicine ecosystem (e.g. industry, HCPs, pathologists and patients) need to lean in to help solve these challenges, and what practical solutions can be applied, including where technological advances could help close the gaps.
