Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine originates from Tekijuku back to 1838. In 1931, Osaka University started and, was reborn as the prototype of the current organization in 1949. Osaka University was selected for the Project for Establishing Institutes for Open Innovation for the 2019–2020 academic year by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Particularly in the area of medicine and healthcare, we are proud of discovering IL6 in 1986, the antibody of which is now commonly used as a major immune and inflammation regulator in the medical community. Discovery of regulatory T cells and subsequent intensive research led to a new paradigm of cancer immunological therapy. Recently, we discovered degenerative medicines such as HMGB1 as a target for improvement of stroke sequelae, iPS cells -derived cornea, gene therapy research for severe dilated cardiomyopathy caused by BAG5 deficiency that requires LVAT and/or heart transplantation.
